10) VSM-PM102 Introduction to Preaching - 3 Credits

Purpose of the Course
To help students gain biblical preaching skills, that integrates varying communication techniques, appropriate exegesis and sensitivity to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Course Objectives
The course will enable the student to:
1. To learn the difference between preaching and teaching.
2. To comprehend the varying styles of communicating the Scriptures and proper application.
3. To fit the different types of themes and biblical literature into their preaching
4. To learn the ministry of the Holy Spirit and how this impacts our preparation and communication.
5. Construct sermons for different occasions and different audiences.

Course Content
Content will include an emphasis on listening to the Holy Spirit and communicating the good news as an act of obedience. Discovering one’s own style of communicating and at the same time, learning to “read” an audience. Discerning how the Holy Spirit is using the sermon and what the application should be. The role of preaching in the weekly life of the Christian leader, Basic speech principles; vocal processes, volume, grammar, figures of speech, sermon length, gestures, audience; methods of presentation; Manuscript, memorization, impromptu, extemporaneous, outline, without notes; Mechanics of preparation; importance of preparation, sources for materials/ideas, planning, methods, files, illustrations, choosing a text, pre-testing; Types of sermons; topical, topical textual, textual expository; Components of a sermon; Introduction, body, illustrations, application; conclusion; Contexts of a sermon: pastoral, didactic, evangelistic.
