9) VSM-PM101 Understanding Pastoral Ministry - 3 Credits

Purpose of the Course
The purpose of this course is to present the Biblical foundation for a theology of pastoral ministry by especially examining the life and practice of Christ Jesus and to equip the student with the knowledge and skills for effective ministry.

Course Objectives
The course will enable the student to:
1. Identify and appreciate the Biblical foundation for a theology of pastoral ministry.
2. Understand the essential ministry principles that Jesus modeled
3. Articulate and apply skills for effective ministry as found in Scripture
4. Analyse a practical Pastoral ministry in Africa today.
5. Implement the acquired knowledge by practicing Pastoral ministry in the world and in the church.

Course Content
All pastoral ministry is continuing the ministry of Jesus. Robert Coleman’s, The Master Plan of Evangelism (in Swahili by permission) will be chief text for this course. Using Jesus as the model, we will explore how Jesus selected, associated, consecrated, imparted, demonstrated, delegated, supervised, and reproduced pastors. The pastor and spiritual life; Spiritual gifts in the ministry; Mission of the church; Goal-setting and planning; Leadership development: equipping the lay people for ministry and mission; Worship: planning and leadership, stewardship; The dynamics of small groups, compassion ministries of the church; Other practical matters of ministry (e.g., hospital and home visits, naming ceremonies, fund raising functions, weddings, funerals, etc.).
