5) VSM-B105 Understanding the Kingdom of God: Gospels - 3 Credits

Purpose of the Course
To introduce the students to the life, teaching and significance of Jesus Christ through the exegetical study of the gospels with particular focus on the overriding theme of the kingdom of God.

Course Objectives
The course will enable the student to:
1. Understand the historical setting, literary structure, and unique contributions of each of the gospels.
2. Evaluate the methods Jesus used in teaching and his key themes, especially the Kingdom of God.
3. Analyse the contexts from which Jesus drew his teachings.
4. Conduct contemporary applications of kingdom theology.

Course Content
The historical and ideological setting in which Jesus' life and ministry takes place and from which early Christianity emerges; The history of interpretation of the synoptics and the life of Jesus including major methodologies and assumptions which guided these interpretations, major theological themes - especially the Kingdom of God. The relevance of kingdom of God theology today in regards to church polity and practice. Applying kingdom of God thinking to all aspects of ministry practice.
