12)  VSM-PM201 Understanding Pastoral Ministry - 3 Credits

Purpose of the Course
The purpose of this course is to present the Biblical foundation for a theology of pastoral ministry as well as studying the pastoral challenges and ministry solutions found in the Epistles while strategizing and applying pastoral ministry solutions to our current African context.

Learning Outcomes
The course will enable the student to:
1. Identify and appreciate the Biblical foundation for a theology of pastoral ministry.
2. Develop theological and ethical positions necessary for sustaining a truly biblical ministry.
3. Understand and strategize how to emulate the essential ministry principles that Jesus modeled
4. Identify theological, sociological, and spiritual challenges in the Epistles and the writer’s responses to these challenges.
5. Evaluate the impact of socio-economic changes, increased urbanization, the impact of Western culture and effects of syncretism on the African church today.
6. Understand and contextualize Paul’s Pastoral ministry as found in the Epistles to our African context.
7. Design ministry solutions that are Biblical based and contextually relevant.


Course Content
As all pastoral ministry is continuing the ministry of Jesus, this course will study the ministry model Jesus provided. By studying the Gospels and the Epistles we will examine -The pastor and his spiritual life; Spiritual gifts in the ministry; Mission of the church; Goal-setting and planning; Leadership development: equipping the lay people for ministry and mission; Worship, stewardship; The dynamics of small groups/ministry teams, Compassion and social justice ministries of the church; Other practical matters of ministry; rites of passage, baptisms; Family - naming ceremonies, children rearing, funerals; Marriage (premarital, wedding, adultery, divorce, remarriage, sexual brokenness),etc.
